Note: This painting was juried into the 143rd Annual International Exhibition and Travel Show. The show will feature watercolors from artist throughout the world and is held at the Salmagundi Club. It attracts more than 3,500 visitors each year.

American Watercolor Society’s 143rd International Traveling Exhibition

“This Way to the Vineyard” has been chosen by the Jury of Awards for inclusion in the American Watercolor Society’s 143rd International Traveling Exhibition. The show will go on a circuit of museums and galleries around the country in the year ahead. A schedule of the tour may be found on the AWS website.

American Watercolor Society

I’m pleased to say that my painting “This Way to the Vineyard” has received the Paul Schwartz Memorial Award in the American Watercolor Society’s 143rd International Exhibition. The award will be presented April 30th, 2010 at the Salmagundi Club in New York City.

Long Shadows at Los Olivos

In 2008 we spent 2 months traveling down the Pacific Coast Highway. On our way to the village of Los Olivos, California we took the time to explore some of the surrounding countryside and happened upon this landscape. I was especially taken with the long shadows that fell down the hillside and this became the inspiration for my painting . It was beautiful to be able to stand there looking down on the splendid scene that was to become the painting I shall call “Long Shadows at Los Olivos.”

Long Shadows at Los Olivos finished!

Long Shadows at Los Olivos is finished, at least I think its finished. If I’m still pleased with it after a couple of weeks then it’s finished.

A new oil painting begins

In 2008 we spent almost 2 months traveling down the Pacific Coast Highway and visited the village of Los Olivos, California. We also took time to explore some of the surrounding countryside and included is a photo I took of a beautiful scene found late in the afternoon on a clear, sunlit day. I was especially taken with the long shadows that fell down the hillside and this became the inspiration for my painting . It was beautiful to be able to stand there looking down on the splendid scene that was to become the painting I shall call “Long Shadows at Los Olivos.”

I loosely sketched the composition on an 18×24 tones canvas and laid in values and shadows with thinned Burnt Umber. More warmth was added with additional layers of yellow and orange where needed to depict the sunlight. These warm colors will shine through subsequent layers of paint and help describe the feeling of that special day. A soft cloth dipped in mineral spirits was used to wipe back to the light canvas to further assign sun struck areas. Thin color is worked over the entire painting not staying in any one place for too long. I don’t allow myself to think about or add any detail yet. This step is always saved until last after all large areas have been massed in and warm and cool color placed.

I continue blocking in color in an effort to cover all the canvas keeping in mind value and color relationships. The yellow under painting looks too bright now but will sparkle through to add warmth and color harmony through out the painting. Tomorrow I’ll continue to refine the painting by adjusting values and temperatures relationships and begin working on detail. Please check tomorrow’s blog to see the completed painting.

New landscape painting in oil

A scene inspired by time spent in the Texas Hill Country. We lived in a very rural area for several years and I always enjoyed the unique landscapes found there. Always the warm summer sun over pale yellow fields punctuated with dark cedar foliage.

Pacific View and Blackberries Too juried into 2nd major exhibition!

I am pleased to announce that my painting Pacific View and Blackberries Too has been selected to be included in the WAS-H 33rd International Exhibition 2010. Nationally recognized jurors are invited to judge this annual event which attracts artists from all over the globe and Frank Webb was chosen as juror this year. This is the second major exhibition Pacific View and Blackberries Too has been juried into.
