The Laurel Mountain Highlands area in Pennsylvania is so beautiful and picturesque and I loved every minute of our time there. Some of the small villages in the area are Somerset, Mount Pleasant and Donegal. Below is a new watercolor study of one of the many different and unique barns that dot the countryside.

Thank you so much for showing the photo and then the painting so we can see how you “interpreted” and what color changes you made to the painting. Was this done en plein air or did you take it back to the studio?
What a wonderful example of forgetting local color and making it so much more interesting and beautiful. The barn became yellow and the trees and road glow with purples and yet it all looks perfect.
You have an amazing capacity to make those perfect changes.
Thank you for posting such a great comment! The photo of the barn was captured from my car window as we drove by and I also made a quick sketch with notes about what most attracted me to the scene. Mostly I like to work in my home studio where I’m very comfortable and it is then easy for me to recall the day with my reference material. Before any large painting I also do a small watercolor study to become even more familiar with the scene and work out possible problems before hand…Joyce
